Idol Thoughts: San Francisco Edition
At one hour, American Idol returned to its normal length last night, which made it so much more tolerable than last week. The auditions moved to San Francisco where we didn"t really find any knockouts, but instead some very solid contenders. More importantly, however, was that Kara and Simon began bickering, and unlike Paula, Kara was not afraid to put her foot down (not that it"ll help). Her declaration of "I"ve got something to say, and I"m gonna say it RIGHT NOW" was joyously pointed, and I once again cheered on the addition of our spunky new judge.
My thoughts on some of the auditioners after the jump....

Barack the Golfer
Courtesy: politicalbase.com
Today was quite a day.
The first African American sworn in as president of the United States is a truly momentous and historic moment.
It signals an end to an enormous racial divide in America; African Americans need no longer be afraid to reach for the top.
We know that already exists in the realm of professional golf where Tiger Woods rules the golf world even as he puts the final healing touches on his knee surgery last June.
The new president is a golfer, too.
I wonder how long it will take some marketing maven with political connections to create a made-for-TV golf show featuring Tiger and the President going head to head?
It would be a show that would score huge ratings and would do a whole helluva lot more to encourage other African Americans to take up the game than a minority exemption offered by one tournament on the PGA Tour.

Week One of Audition
"Laaaaaa!!!"
American Idol returned to the airwaves this week, and it was pretty much just what you"d expect: good singers, bad singers, and awkward Seacrest moments. New to the proceedings was the addition of permanent judge Kara DioGuardi, who fit right in just perfectly, if you ask me. I love that she"s testy and opinionated, but even better, she seems to have an angry bitch side to her, which is most welcomed. We caught a glimpse of it when Bikini Girl told her off, but I have a feeling there"ll be more to come.
Meanwhile, as for the auditioners, there hasn"t been anyone who"s truly blown me away. The singers we"ve seen have been more or less ho-hum, with some being better than others. The trainwrecks, meanwhile, have been extremely tedious these year. Normally, there are some disasters that are simply riveting. This time around, however, the bad singers have been simply bad. No entertainment value. I"ve been finding myself antsy to move on to the next person. Fox would do well to employ some healthy editing.
Anyway, my thoughts on some of the singers after the jump....

Kelly Rutherford dubbed violent by Daniel Giersch
Gossip Girl actress Kelly Rutherford has been dubbed violent by her multi-millionaire ex-partner Daniel Giersch, according to reports. The comment may further heat up couple"s custody battle for their only child. The four-month-pregnant starlet, who plays Lily van der Woodsen on the American TV teen drama, had knocked the legal doors for divorce and was presently locked in a custody battle for two-year-old son Hermes.
Fox News reported that Rutherford had filed an application in Santa Monica Branch of the Los Angeles Superior Court on January 9 to seek permission to take Hermes along with her to New York where she would be filming for the series. However, Giersch had immediately objected to the request saying it would be "absolutely detrimental" to their child"s well being.
He further alleged that his former celebrity wife was "typically stressed out" due to her busy schedule and had also acted violently in the past in front of their child. Giersch"s legal papers claimed that the star had previously threatened him with an open fist during an angry swipe and had also hurled a laptop at him, calling him "terrible names" in the presence of little Hermes.
Rutherford has been denied her request to hop interstate with her son and the court is to take up the issue on January 21.

The Only Way To Enjoy 'The Hills'
good evening! did everyone catch the season #4 finale of the hills last night? it"s totally one of the most annoying shows ever but i can"t help myself from getting wrapped up in the (fake) drama - really the only way to enjoy the show is to forget about all the real-life happenings we hear about on practically a daily basis - and just go with the flow - if you start to obsess over what"s real and what"s not - the show quickly becomes quite lame - take it for what it is - a drummed up soap opera! of course spencer pratt is an asshole but in the context of last night"s episode he actually came out lookin" a little more decent (he pulled the plug on the "marriage" at the courthouse - so girlfriend heidi montag can have the big wedding she"s always dreamed of....)
however once you realize the couple is just doing this so MTV can film their big wedding (for season #5 which will be happening) and probably make more than a few bucks off the entire affair - it kills the drama! i know it"s hard to forget about what"s really going on behind the scenes in "real-life" yet it"s seriously the only way i can enjoy the show - i even shed a few tears when lauren conrad had her long overdue meeting with ms. montag! below there"s tons of pictures from last night"s bash held at NYC"s tavern on the green - where "mr. & mrs. pratt" arrived by horse drawn carriage (quick - someone get PETA on the horn!) popbytes over & out for now....xoxo

Jason Collett's 2nd Annual Basement Revue
Merry Christmas! Last year I attended (and promoted) the first edition of Jason Collett"s Basement Revue - a variety show-style residency at The Dakota Tavern hosted by roots rocker (and sometimes Broken Social Scenester) Jason Collett. It included an intense and creative political monologue by Andrew Whiteman (aka Apostle of Hustle) as well as a surprise solo performance by Hayden. It wasn"t your average holiday concert and it left me hopeful that it would become an annual event.

Nicole Kidman: 'Life is Brilliant'
Nicole Kidman says her life is "beautiful" right now.
The actress - who lives in Nashville with husband Keith Urban and their baby daughter Sunday Rose - says her outlook on things has changed since being a mom.
Kidman - who gave birth to her first biological child in July - said, "My life is Beautiful. My awareness of the world is more profound now I"m a mother.
"We live on a farm with 40 acres of land. I"ve got an amazing vegetable garden. Courgettes, vine-ripened tomatoes, corn. I always dreamed of it. I tried one in LA when I was 25. It was OK but it wasn"t like this - huge and overgrown and people coming over to take vegetables home.
"We go down to the local coffee shop every morning. We"re part of a community and it"s lovely."
Kidman, 41, also revealed her philosophy of life.
She said, "Part of our job as human beings is to share our knowledge. So, have no regrets.
"Every relationship leads you to where you want to be. Learn to be comfortable with being alone and saying no to people. Read great literature. Define your moral code. Keep asking questions and challenging. Rebellion creates character."

Meet The New Tranny On The Block
With last week"s exit of Lauri on The Real Housewives of Orange County, we knew there"d be a new lady in the wings to take her place. Enter Lynne, a surgically enhanced hybrid of Linda Hamilton, Robin Miller, and Kathy Baker. Her main selling point is that she likes to look young and be the cool mom - two qualities that pretty much define most OC housewives - and while she has yet to intermingle with the show"s grand dames of Jeana and Vicki, I"m sure their eventual meeting will be full of hostile reactions and rolled eyes (especially when they see Lynne"s not so wonderful boob job).
Meanwhile, on the Gretchen front, things seemed to be taking a turn for the worst as she was relegated to feeding Jeff via IV. Poor guy. Poor girl. Juxtaposing her sad situation with the so-trivial-it-hurts dilemma of Vicki and the yacht felt a bit cruel. But I guess there"s no good way to wedge cancer into a show that celebrates materialism and tackiness. On the plus side, we got to see more of Jeana"s daughter/Coulter-in-training as she fired a gun for the first time at the shooting range. Yay youth of America!
Anyway, on to the photocap....

Ellen DeGeneres keen to get pregnant
>> Ellen DeGeneres says adverts for children''s clothing make her want to have a baby.
Ellen, who married her female partner Portia di Rossi in a ceremony in August, is thinking about starting a family after seeing the "cute" models featured in clothing company GAP''s new campaign.
She joked: "I see those adverts that have the babies in them for GAP and maybe it''s cute that they have a little GAP knit sweater on their head, a little GAP outfit. But they advertise kids very well, those GAP ads.
"I don''t even look at the clothes - I just go, ''That''s a cute baby, I''ll take that one''."
Speaking more seriously, Ellen, 50, added that because she and Portia, 35, are a same sex couple they have to carefully consider having a child.
She said: "I think that''s one of the things about not being able to just accidentally get pregnant and have a child. You really, really have to want one - whether it''s trying to figure out how you get pregnant or if you adopt."
She is also keen to stress that, despite her broodiness, she and Portia have no plans to increase their family at present.
Ellen added to AOL TV: "I think that''s even more of a reason that people that aren''t able to have kids should be allowed to adopt - because you have to really want a kid, and that''s a big responsibility.
"So we are not taking it lightly. We would really think about it before we did it."

McQueen for Target
I''m finding it hard to believe images from Alexander McQueen''s Target line are already out, but they are. Well, two of them anyway.
The first image doesn''t do much for me, but the second one. . .Well, I quite like it.
And the rest of the collection, as described by WWD, sounds promising:
"The collection has a muted color palette of black, white, gray and tan with accents of cobalt blue and bright pink. Studs and mesh give items an edge. There are studded jeans, shorts and denim jackets with asymmetrical closures, short tuxedo jackets and matching shorts, dresses in a blue and white painterly fabric, a one-shoulder dress in a gray-and-black zigzag pattern with a thick black belt, and a T-shirt with the image of Moss. ''The manufacturing is well finished and second to none in that price point,'' McQueen said of the collection. ''It’s not expensive at all, but you get the execution of a well-designed collection. Because of the use of materials and the feeling, [Target] knew where the collection would go.'' The designer’s favorite pieces in the line include ''the pink and black pieces and the little prom dresses.''"
Excited yet? I know I am!
