Overheard at the Gothams

Overheard at the Gothams
Not half an hour after The Hurt Locker won the Best Feature prize at last night"s Gotham Independent Film Awards, hordes of awardgoers trekked from Cipriani Wall Street to the Kodak/indieWIRE afterparty at the Tribeca Cinemas. Free liquor still being one of life"s great social lubricants, even those who headed to the party empty-handed were in pleasant spirits when I asked about their favorite films of 2009-Gothams-related or otherwise:

"Fantastic Mr. Fox was hand-made and the kind of care that goes in with that feels intimate. It"s impossible to fake. Wes Anderson always has that ability to bring you into a world that you think you know but don"t, and allows you an invitation. I haven"t had more fun in the movies in a while."

- Ben Foster, "Breakthrough Actor" nominee for The Messenger

"I want this to read "Damien Chazelle, over cocktails, said...." I like Two Lovers because it"s unashamed about its romanticism. I loved that. It reminded me of City Lights and Sunrise and Seventh Heaven, movies like that that people don"t make anymore. It just felt old-fashioned in the best way."

- Damien Chazelle, director of "Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You" nominee Guy and Madeline on a Park Bench

"Well, Gotham Awards-related and in general, The Hurt Locker. I thought it was amazing. I was floored the entire time."

- Ry-Russo Young, director of "Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You" winner You Wont Miss Me

"I have to say, I liked The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans. To me, it"s inspiring to see what I have to believe is a complete fearlessness to make something that sucks. It"s only when you are one with that fear that you can truly make something good. You have to be prepared for it to completely fail before you can get stuff that"s as utterly unique and magical as what"s in there. I was sitting and watching with my mouth open."

- Alexander Olch, director of The Windmill Movie

"I typically like one or two movies a year. I"m one of these people who hates a lot of things. I"m not the "love everything, celebrate independent film" type of guy. I"m more bitchy: "Everything sucks, that movie"s so overrated," but this year I really liked a lot. I haven"t ranked anything yet, but early in the year, I liked In the Loop and The Hurt Locker, and then there was a long stretch where there wasn"t much. Then lately, I liked A Serious Man, An Education, Precious, The September Issue and The Messenger. I thought Adventureland was awesome, and I loved Inglourious Basterds-that"s probably my number one. I fuckin" loved that."

- Robert Siegel, "Breakthrough Director" winner for Big Fan

"My two favorite films are the movies I"ve most recently seen: Fantastic Mr. Fox, which is so unique and strange and mesmerizing, and Ninja Assassin, which is completely psychotic and delicious."

- Jonathan Ames, novelist and creator of HBO"s Bored to Death

Sienna Miller's Mara Carrizo Scalise Heidi R and R

Sienna Miller's Mara Carrizo Scalise Heidi R and R

Above Sienna Miller is pictured in the Mara Carrizo Scalise Heidi R& R bag with cone studs ($375 -- contact Info@mcsleather.com for more info or you can order it online. Available in chocolate brown or black). The bag is perfect for Miller"s Edie Sedgwick-esque style and the price point is spot-on. The leather is soft and has a nice texture to it and I"m liking the slouchy-ness and long strap which give it a vintage feel. That said this is definitely a "young bag" (ie nothing I would want to see my mama in, especially given the way the leather on the flap is cut).

What do you think about Sienna Miller"s bag?

Songs From a Room Truly Rock

Songs From a Room Truly Rock

Toronto-based Songs From a Room were the one of the first acts up this past Sunday night at the Horseshoe in a line-up that included drum and bass act Molten Lava (who reminded me of Death From Above), and Alberta tech rock band Passenger Action. Everyone put on a really great show, but Songs From a Room were my favourite, with a super energetic and cohesive set.

I showed up at the bar kinda sleepy-eyed and exhausted, but not for long. The guys from Songs From a Room rocked out with a set full of pure, unapologetic hardcore action.

Film Fest of the Dead

Film Fest of the Dead
by Steve Dollar

Like swallows to Capistrano, the zombies return to the Catalonian seaside resort of Sitges every October-at least they have since 1967-and their number keeps growing. The 42nd edition of the Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantàstic was a breeding pool for all things undead or otherwise beyond mortal kin or consciousness. Yet, Hollywood entertainments like Zombieland or increasingly blah cult auteur franchises, like George A. Romero"s Survival of the Dead, were merely early Halloween window-dressing for this kaleidoscopic Cannes of cinematic extremism.

The festival, which ran from Oct. 1-12 this year, celebrated the 30th anniversary of Alien and gave a career achievement award to Malcolm McDowell, likewise honoring Walter Hill, Ivan Reitman and the alarmingly vital octogenarian splatter king Herschell Gordon Lewis. (These may not always be so coveted. Last year, Abel Ferrara handed his trophy, a scale model of the Time Machine, to a hotel bartender to settle a tab). Everyone from Park Chan-wook to Viggo Mortensen to that spooky little girl from Orphan made appearances. [editor"s viewing tip: click for Steve Dollar"s reaction to an Orphan mask.] And if you turned around in the theater to see who was kicking the back of your seat, it was that Argentine provocateur Gaspar Noe, likely getting payback for sneaking ahead of him in line for breakfast buffet French fries.

What to Do If You Can't Get Any SEO Traffic to Your Site:Pay Per Click Management

What to Do If You Can't Get Any SEO Traffic to Your Site:Pay Per Click Management
It is imperative for online businesses to undertake Pay Per Click management services. Pay Per Click, also referred to as PPC, is an internet advertising strategy. In this model, advertisers pay their host websites for the number of times their advertisement is clicked by online visitors, instead of paying for just hosting the ad. This technique is known as ‘sponsored listing’. Additionally, the higher one bids for specific keywords or phrases, the higher one’s website gets indexed in a search engine.

Pay Per Click Management: Skills and Functions
PPC advertising is an effective brand-building tool as well as a good way of gearing traffic to one’s website. Pay Per Click management involves administering an online advertisement campaign by analyzing targeted keywords and phrases. In Search Engine Optimization terms (which does not involve monetary transactions), PPC increases a site’s internet footprint immensely. PPC management combines certain key areas and skills, these are:
  • Familiarity with websites – Understanding the website where the advertisement has been placed, its methodologies and its practices is essential. However, this skill can be acquired only through analysis and rigorous monitoring.
  • Budget and geographic location of traffic – Only by budgeting and analyzing the direction of the target traffic can an online website decide on the ideal network to place the ad. Decide the expense of the campaign according to the cost per click. If the expenditure is more than cost per click, the company must check its campaign strategy or keywords.
  • Persuasive advertisements – The advertisements placed on websites must move visitors and draw their attention towards it. Short, crisp phrases or grammatically correct and comprehensible sentences describing company’s business work best in these advertisements.
  • Appropriate keywords – Proper keyword selection will positively affect the website’s conversion rates because it will increase the cost per click. Keywords must be small so that only those interested in purchasing the product or service view the advertisement.
  • Monitoring campaign – Monitoring the conversion rate of a PPC campaign regularly is important since it will improve one’s search engine results. The conversion rate is judged by the percentage of visitors who opt to purchase a service from a site. A PPC campaign is successful only when the increased traffic to a website translates to an improvement in the conversion rate.
  • It is essential to employ a good Pay Per Click management service to achieve better percentage of visitors.

Jennifer Aniston Eyes A Music Career

Jennifer Aniston Eyes A Music Career
Jennifer Aniston might be one of the most beautiful actresses on the plant, but she could be eyeing up a music career after belting out a tune on the Ellen DeGeneres show this week.

The poor star is appearing as a singer in her forthcoming movie The Goree Girls, so good old Ellen decided she had to prove her worth before she could actually play the part of a musician.

So, in the spirit of American TV, Ellen pulled out a mic and get Jen to serenade her with a few lines from the song, I"ve Got A Crush On You, can"t say we"ve ever heard it before, but nevertheless, we"re definitely going to find it on iTunes now.

But don"t take our word for it, have a listen below and tell us what you think? Is she the new Britney? Or should she stick to the day job?

feeding time backstage @ Rachel Roy

feeding time backstage @ Rachel Roy
Fashion week is in full swing in New York this week.  Lots of runways, parties and get togethers.  So what are they eating backstage at the fashion shows?  Generally speaking, I feel quite disconnected to fashion week… somewhere between the ‘I need a pork chop or I’m going to pass out’ look in their eyes and their skeletonish frames I start wondering what does this have to do with me??

Among the slew of press releases, I found something I could relate to… FOOD!  Dr. Oz Garcia has taken up the challenge of feeding the fashionatti healthy, sustaining foods.

    • Cilantro chicken with chihuahua cheese sandwich
    • Hummus with sunflower greens & radicchio sandwich
    • Egg salad sandwich
    • Smoked tofu, pickles & bean sprouts sandwich
    • Butternut squash with Asian pears and hazelnuts
In addition to that the lucky people backstage at the Rachel Roy were treated to healthy waters by Dr. Oz and AM/PM AriZona Fast Shots.  AM Awake for a natural boost and PM Relax as a sleep aid.  So now that I’ve daydreamed about food long enough I’m off to make that egg salad sandwich…

Great Ideas for Baby Shower Gifts

Great Ideas for Baby Shower Gifts
Parents-to-be organize Baby Shower parties to celebrate the coming of the newborn child into the family. If you are really confused about what baby shower gifts you should get, then you could ask the parents of the baby what they would like as baby shower gifts. This would be a wise thing to do, as you will be getting the parents something they would genuinely need and appreciate for their future child.

    The best baby shower gifts
A baby shower is a very significant event in the life of the mother-to-be. You can either buy baby shower presents and gifts or get the gifts personalized. Books are desired gifts; it is found that when parents read out to babies it helps increase their vocabulary from a very tender age. This will help in the all round development of the child. I believe music CDs make excellent baby shower gifts. Music is very soothing and entertaining and they make for great baby shower gifts. Look for quiet or rousing musical baby shower gifts which feature instrumentalists and vocalists. Nursery rhyme CDs and DVDs may also be a good choice. You can also look for baby slings that will help the parents cradle their babies and keep their hands free at the same time. I would recommend gifting deluxe baskets with various kinds of baby lotions, baby oils, botanical shampoos, and soaps. This makes for an interesting baby shower gift. I would suggest you to consider baby bathrobes, and soft towels as gifts too.

    Other gift ideas
Try and give gifts that would be of use to the infant in his early months. Clothes, toiletries, and toys would be useful. If you want to gift something that the baby could use when he's a little bigger, I think gifting a play pen or an activity gym is a good idea. If you are not familiar with this play item, let me tell you that there is a soft cloth which is surrounded by arches and bars that are suspended from various angles; the baby gets engaged and plays in a safe environment. Parents can relax and go about their chores. The list of baby shower gifts is an exceptionally long one; you can have a well designed car seat for the baby; a baby travel bag, which is actually a diaper bag able to accommodate baby clothes, bibs, diapers, toys, safety pins, and other essential items for the babies; baby toys, baby diaper cakes, and baby gear gifts.

    Solange Does The Big Chop

    Solange Does The Big Chop
I don"t generally pay much attention to Beyonce"s little sister but I have to admit I was a little surprised to see this photo of her sporting a TWA (teeny weenie afro) this morning. The girl may not have the chops, looks, or appeal of her older sibling but she"s definitely proved that she"s gutsy for stepping out of the shadow of Bey"s lace-front and letting the sun shine down on those follicles.
    Sigh.
Anytime I see a picture of a woman with super short natural hair like this I miss the days when I sported the style. I can still remember how good it felt the first time I took a shower with my new "do and felt that warm water pouring over my scalp.
Now if only Solange could record some music to match the fierceness of her new look....
